ALPHABETIC ORGANIZATION


Hard Disk

Fixed memory on a disc, with high capacity and high data transfer speed on computers.

Set of physical components (electronic, magnetic and mechanical) or systems, such as a computer.

Harmonised Standard

Technical specification adopted by a standardising body recognised by a mandate from the European Commission. It conforms to the applicable procedures and aims to establish European requisite. Compliance is not mandatory.

HDTV - High Definition TV

Enhanced television system which provides a significant improvement to image quality, through the use of higher resolution (essentially four times higher than Standard Definition), and also provides 16:9 format viewing, which allows a field of vision that is more adapted to the human eye. It is often associated with multichannel sound, also with improved quality.

Hertz (HZ)

Unit of frequency equal to a complete cycle of one wave per second. One kilohertz is equivalent to 1,000 cycles per second (cps), one Megahertz to one million cps and one Gigahertz to 1 billion cps.

Transmission system by the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the atmosphere using parabolic antennas.

High Frequency

Term generally used to describe frequencies higher than voice frequencies.

High Resolution

Term to describe the detail and superior quality of an image. Measured in respect of the number of pixels used to create the image. The higher the number of pixels, the better the image.

Evolution of the GSM system which enables transmission at speeds of up to 57 Kbps.

Higher Telecommunications Equipment Room

Installation room of the equipment for receiving and processing sound and television signals of Types A and B and fixed connections via radio (FWA).

Higher Telecommunications Space

In portuguese, Espaço de Telecomunicações Superior (ETS). Room, compartment, closet or box of restricted access, for the installation of equipment and establishment of connections for the reception and processing of sound and televised signals of types A, B and FWA.

HLR - Home Location Register

Register of subscriber data used in mobile communications networks.

Host

Computer of the Internet access supplier. It may be accessed through a terminal if it is connected to the network of an institution with a central computer directly connected to the Internet. The host of the Internet access supplier may also be accessed through a modem.
