LAN - Local Area Network

Land Mobile Service / Private Networks
In portuguese, Serviço Móvel Terrestre / Redes Privativas (SMT/RP). Service to support radio communications services between a closed group of users. It is made up of base stations and command stations at well determined points, and mobile stations, or just mobile stations.

Leased circuit
Telecommunications resource of a public network which provides transmission between two terminal points not involving user controlled switching function. It is a permanent point to point circuit for exclusive use by its client(s) and may be used for voice communication or the transmission of data or image.

Line
Wire or set of wires used to transmit electrical signals. The lines may be one directional or bidirectional, whereby traffic may be processed in just one or both directions.

LLU - Local Loop Unbundling
Unbundling of the local loops between the client's premises and the local exchange. This enables other operators to use them on a full or shared basis in order to provide services to the user. Also known as Local Loop Offer.

Local Loop
Physical circuit of twisted metallic pair which connects a terminal point in the network at the subscriber's premises to the main distribution frames or an equivalent installation on the public fixed telephone network.

Local Sub-loop
Partial local loop which connects a terminal point of the network of the subscriber's premises to a concentration point of an intermediary access specified in the fixed public telephone network.

Lower Telecommunications Equipment Room
Installation room of the Main Distribution Frames of the building (copper pair cables) and the Coaxial Distribution Frame (distribution of sound and television signals), at ground floor level.

Lower Telecommunications Space
In portuguese, Espaço de Telecomunicações Inferior (ETI). Restricted access room, compartment, cabinet or box for the installation of equipment and the establishment of connections. It normally houses the building's telecommunications cabinet for the interconnection with the various operators.

LTE - Long-Term Evolution
New broadband radio system that results from the evolution of 2G and 3G systems. Its technical specifications were developed within 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project). The LTE system utilizes OFDM as access technology in donwlink, supporting diferent channels (1,4, 3, 5, 10, 15 e 20 MHz), having up to 300 Mbps downlink speeds and 75 Mbps uplink speeds.
