ALPHABETIC ORGANIZATION


Codification

Procedure through which information (data, sound and image) is converted into an appropriate format at the level of the transmission channel used. A television signal may be codified into an analogue format (e.g. PAL or NTSC) or into a digital format (MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, e.g.).

Codification/Compression

Expression used frequently to mean codification and compression operations performed in a single device, known in general as encoder, which is the case, e.g., with MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 digital codification.

Compression

Procedure through which the amount of information (data, sound and image) conveyed is reduced by eliminating information deemed to be redundant or irrelevant.

Conditional Access

Technical measure and/or arrangement whereby access to the protected service in an intelligible form is made conditional upon prior individual authorisation. As a rule, conditional access systems associated to paid television resort to encryption, but other methods may also be used to avoid non-authorized access.

Coverage

Provision of a given television service in a specific location. RTP Açores, e.g., is available only in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, as this service has a regional coverage scope, while RTP 1 has a national coverage scope.
