SFN - Single Frequency Network

Broadcast network where several transmitters simultaneously send the same signal over the same frequency channel. In Mainland Portugal, e.g., the digital terrestrial television is transmitted in UHF channel 67.

Simulcast

Period during which broadcasts of analogue terrestrial television and digital terrestrial television coexist.

Smart Card

A card, generally in plastic, which is inserted into a slot in a set-top-box or a television receiver and unencrypts conditional access digital signals, allowing them to be received.

Standard-definition television

Abbreviation: SDTV. The standard image quality in digital television, associated to a similar resolution as analogue PAL systems, which provides the user with a better quality, given that digital television prevents ghosting and other analogue broadcasting problems.

STB - Set-Top-Box

Device that connects to a television, via SCART or HDMI cable, and whose main function is to decode an external digital television signal, so that contents (television programs, interactive services) may be displayed on the television screen. The STB may also have decryption functions, where it is associated to conditional access televisions services.

Switch-Off (of the terrestrial analogue system)

Termination of terrestrial analogue television broadcasting. From 26 April 2012, the terrestrial television service has no longer been available via analogue, and has been available through digital only.

Switchover

All the process involved in the transition from the existing analogue terrestrial television system to the digital terrestrial system.
