The European Commission has announced the reorganisation of the Information Society and Media Directorate-General, which, from 01 July 2012, will be known as the Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT). The changes made to this DG's structure and mission entail a reduction in the number of operational units from 52 to 46. According to Neelie Kroes, Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, this is an adaptation that is necessary to face the challenges of the next 10 years.
