ANACOM collects 29 million euros in regulation fees in 2011
ANACOM - Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações has confirmed that, in respect of electronic communications, it collected a total of around 29 million euros in regulation fees in 2011, equivalent to around 0.6% of the sector's total turnover.
These values should not be confused with the fees paid by telecommunications operators as a result of their use of the radio spectrum. As a scarce public asset, use of the radio spectrum is granted in return for payment, justifying the existence of fees for the use of frequencies. These are separate from regulation fees, which include the administrative fees payable for exercise of the activity of supplier of electronic communication networks and services, as well as the fees due for the issue of declarations supporting rights issued by ANACOM to undertakings which provide electronic communication services.
Electronic Communications Network: Transmission systems and, where applicable, switching or routing equipment and other resources which permit the conveyance of signals by wire, by radio, by optical or by other electromagnetic means, including satellite networks, fixed (circuit- and packet-switched, including Internet) and mobile terrestrial networks, electricity cable systems, to the extent that they are used for the purpose of transmitting signals, networks used for radio and television broadcasting, and cable television networks, irrespective of the type of information conveyed (Law no. 5/2004 of 10 February).
Electronic Communications Services: Service normally provided for remuneration which consists wholly or mainly in the conveyance of signals on electronic communications networks, including telecommunications services and transmission services in networks used for broadcasting, without prejudice to the exclusion referred to in point b) of paragraph 1 of article 2 (Law no. 5/2004 of 10 February).
Radio spectrum: Set of frequencies associated with radio waves.
