European Regulators Group (ERG) - Brussels

The 20th meeting of the European Regulators Group (ERG) has taken place in Brussels. Held on 15 and 16 February 2007, the meeting was marked by the appointment of Daniel Pataki, of the Hungarian regulator, as its chair for 2008.

The meeting also saw the Group reaffirm the importance of developing the consistency of regulation in key markets and its support for a common regulatory approach to cross-border services. This position anticipates the ERG's written response to Commissioner Viviane Reding's request for it to consider several institutional proposals as part of the Commission's review of the regulatory Framework for electronic communications and services.

The ERG stressed that it was important for the Commission to fully exploit the Group's potential as an advisory body, calling for closer cooperation between the two organizations so as to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach to the regulation of electronic communications.

The meeting also agreed on a new collaborative mechanism to improve the efficiency of the market notification process, and took the first step practical steps towards the establishment of the permanent secretariat, agreeing on a budget for 2007 and launching the recruitment process, expected to take place this spring.

The range of subjects addressed by the meeting included the harmonisation of remedies, regulatory accounting, SMS termination rates, unbundling, broadband quality and prices, broadband competition, new generation networks, and Convergence and access to content.

The next ERG meeting is scheduled to take place in Oslo, Norway, from 30 May to 01 June 2007.
