Travelling to Portugal

Non-European Union citizens travelling to Portugal require an entry visa.

Information about the requirements for obtaining a visa should be requested from the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in your country.

As a general rule, to apply for a visa, you require two passport photographs and proof of a return ticket. You then need to complete an application form in duplicate. You should mention the purpose of your visit.

Visa applications are normally processed in two working days. However it is recommended that visa applications are made as far in advance as possible and a minimum of three weeks before your date of travel.

There are no special vaccination requirements to enter Portugal. However visitors are recommended to arrange health insurance and bring proof of this with them. It is recommended that you ask for the European Health Insurance Card in your own country.

Getting to Lisbon

Lisbon is an easy city to get to, by plane, car, train or boat.

By plane

Lisbon International Airport is just 7km from the city centre and is served daily by flights from all major European cities and other world cities. The Portuguese airlines, TAP - Air Portugal and Portugália Airlines, both fly to Lisbon as do many international airlines.

By road

Travelling to Lisbon by road makes for a pleasant journey through the Portuguese countryside. Various motorways enter the city, including the A1, 25th April Bridge, Vasco da Gama Bridge and the CREL.

By train

National and international trains arrive daily in Lisbon. Besides Santa Apolónia station, Lisbon's other main terminus Gare do Oriente can be found next to Parque das Nações. Both stations are directly connected to the city centre by metro and bus.

By boat

The Port of Lisbon is the most active port on Europe's Atlantic coast. It is equipped with three quays for cruise ships: Alcântara, Rocha Conde Óbidos and Santa Apolónia. The city also has a number of marinas for pleasure boats in the docks of Belém, Santo Amaro, Bom Sucesso, Alcântara and Olivais.

Currency / Credit Cards

• Portugal uses the Euro (€), which is divided into 100 cents;
• ATM cash machines, called Multibanco machines, are available 24 hours a day.

In Portugal, most large hotels, car rental companies and stores accept major credit cards: Visa, American Express, Eurocard-Mastercard and Diners.

Banks, Travellers Cheques

Banks are open Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 3pm, except on public holidays. All banks change money and major travellers cheques are accepted in Portugal.

Climate

Lisbon has an Atlantic climate with Mediterranean influences. The temperature range is rarely that wide and most days are sunny, even in winter.

Portuguese local time is Greenwich Meantime (GMT).

Electricity

Electrical current: 230 / 400 volts, at 50 hertz. European standard plugs are used and users of American style pugs will need an adaptor and 230 volt transformer.
