WAN - Wide Area Network

Widened communications network which allows the interconnection and intercommunication of a group of computers in a widened area, namely international.

WAP - Wireless Application Protocol

Wireless application protocol which allows users of mobile telephones and other wireless digital devices to access the contents of the Internet, exchange email or carry out other data transmission operations. It is particularly used in mobile communications networks.

WAP Gateway

Access door of mobile devices to the contents of the Web. Theoretically it is capable of converting HTML into WML. However, a large part of the content accessed by WAP gateways has already been specifically conceived in WML.

WiMAX - Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access

WiMax is a radio technology which allows broadband Internet access, with a coverage area greater than that guaranteed by Wi-Fi. Some specialists consider it a potential substitute for DSL, mainly to cover remote and difficult to access areas, where installing a physical infrastructure is not seen as viable in financial terms.

- The definitions and acronyms presented should be understood in the scope of postal services and electronic communications, information and audiovisual technologies respectively.

- The definitions presented aim to facilitate the perception of concepts for citizens in general, and have, wherever possible, been given in a simplified form, not necessarily coinciding with the technical and legal terminologies which strictly speaking, prevail over these.

- Occasionally, to illustrate determined definitions, examples have been used which are in way exhaustive or cover all existing possibilities.
