As at the end of the first quarter of 2012, there were 3.073 million subscription television service subscribers in Portugal, an increase of 96,000 customers over the previous quarter, with a rate of growth reported at 3.2%.
The number of subscribers reported at the end of the first quarter of 2012 is at the upper limit of the forecast range resulting from this variable's recent historical trend.
Offers supported over optical fibre (FTTH/B) were the main drivers of the service's growth -around 45.6% of new customers, in net terms, took up these offers, followed by offerings supported over cable TV networks (28.8%) and xDSL (20.7%).
As at the end of March, the cable TV distribution service accounted for 48% of all subscription TV subscribers - a decline of 0.6 percentage points compared to the previous quarter - while DTH represented 22.9% and xDSL represented 19.1%. The weight of optical fibre (FTTH/B) continued to increase, accounting for 10% of all subscribers.
About 69.5% of pay-television subscribers subscribe to the service as part of a bundle of services.
There were additional 114 thousand subscribers to bundled offers which include subscription television. The main drivers of this increase were the fixed telephone service + fixed broadband + television bundles (56%) and fixed telephone service + fixed broadband bundles (44%).
In terms of market share, ZON/TV Cabo had 52.8% of customers, PTC had a share of 36.1%, and Cabovisão, the third largest operator, had 8.4% of customers.
By support technology, the total number of cable television subscribers - around 1.48 million - increased by about 28 thousand over the previous quarter. This value is within the forecast range resulting from the historic trend.
In the case of Direct to Home (DTH) technology, there were 704 thousand customers reported in March, representing an increase of 5 thousand customers over the previous quarter and an increase of 33 thousand year-on-year. This increase in the number of subscribers is also reported within the forecast range resulting from the historic trend.
Meanwhile, the number of pay-TV subscribers with the service supported over optical fibre (FTTH/B) increased by 16.7%, to a total of 307 thousand subscribers.
Offers supported over the public telephone network (xDSL/IP) accounted for a reported 587 thousand customers at the end of March, 20 thousand more than in the previous quarter. This variation is within the forecast range resulting from the historic trend.
