The traffic of postal services operated on a competitive basis surpassed 66 million objects in the second quarter of this year, accounting for about 20% of total postal traffic - an increase of 4% over the previous quarter. In year-on-year terms it fell by 3.5%.
Total postal traffic (reserved and liberalised services) rose by 3% over the previous quarter but dropped 3.5% in year-on-year terms.
Between April and June national postal traffic surpassed 57 million objects. Outgoing international traffic totalled about 5 million objects, while incoming international traffic stood at more than 4 million objects. National traffic represented 86% of total postal traffic operated in competition, outgoing international traffic represented 7.4% and incoming international traffic about 6.4%.
At the end of the second quarter the Grupo CTT (CTT and CTT Expresso) was responsible for 93.9% of total traffic, versus 93.6% in the previous quarter. In outgoing international traffic the Grupo CTT accounted at the end of June for a 92.2% share, down from the 93.4% recorded in the first quarter. It accounted for 82.7% of incoming international traffic, versus 82.2% in the previous quarter.
Five million of the 66 million liberalised postal objects recorded in the second quarter pertain to the express mail category, which recorded 7.4% growth during the review period. The remaining 61 million objects pertain to the category of postal services not covered by the express mail category - 3.7% more than in the previous quarter.
During the same period, the Grupo CTT companies held a 41.1% share of express mail traffic, versus 38.9% in the previous quarter, while the other operators held 58.9% versus the 61.1% recorded in the first quarter. The Grupo CTT held 97.6% of the market for services not covered by the express mail category, versus 97.5% in the previous quarter.
Regarding human resources, in the second quarter of this year and for the first time in the last 12 months growth was recorded in the sector of postal services operated on a competitive basis. In June there were 794 more workers than at the end of March, for quarterly growth of 4.8%. The Grupo CTT was mainly responsible for the trend with this indicator.
Regarding material resources relatively insignificant variations were recorded in the number of access points and the number of distribution centres. The vehicle fleet increased by 3.1% between April and June.
The postal coverage and postal density indexes remained unchanged, respectively, at 21.3 access points per 100 square kilometres and 535 inhabitants per access point.
During the second quarter of this year there were 12 entities authorised to provide express mail services and four entities licensed to provide postal services not covered by the express mail category.
Postal services operated in competition encompass mailed correspondence whose price is above three times the reference tariff (priority mail - correio azul - up to 20 grams) and which weighs more than 100 grams.
