"This report has attempted to capture and consolidate a series of insights into key areas of innovation and important governance- and practice-related considerations in the field of citizen science. The field is evolving rapidly and taking stock of developments should be a periodic activity, so that learning about emerging developments can inform new and ongoing initiatives in a formative way. As we have shown throughout this report, the opportunities presented by both technologyled developments and by social responses to them (especially in the governance of ethical practice and quality assurance space) are vast. These opportunities also give rise to new risks of unintended consequences that could potentially alienate contributors to citizen science efforts (e.g. risks that could accompany the implementation of AI and machine learning) and which may contribute to the misuse of citizen science (e.g. marketing campaigns being branded as citizen science)." |
