It concludes that a fresh wave of digital transformation, the Second Digital Revolution, is coming because of cheap and readily available hardware, processing, and connectivity as well as new, disruptive technologies. This will be more all-encompassing than the first wave, with more verticals and processes impacted and automated by digitalization. Its impact will be felt across value chains, supply chains, consumption, and monetization.
Those companies providing technology and connectivity, the Digital Enablers, will be able to leverage the $4.8 trillion opportunity to support this transformation, with the greatest spending in the enterprise technology segment. However, certain players – which we term SMART players – will be able to leverage a disproportionate share of this opportunity. Internet platform providers are most likely to fulfill this role, dominating the ecosystems through which many digital services are accessed, particularly among consumers.
Yet the Digital Enabler opportunity will be fraught with challenges. Increased competition, attracted by revenue growth and facilitated by more open ecosystems, will mean that Digital Enablers must place the needs of customers at the heart of their decisions and processes. Innovation, partnerships, scale, agility, and service bundling will all be vital to support this new outlook on the market." |
