NOTAS:

One of the characteristic features of power line communications (PLC) technology is its ability to position itself in many different ways, and thus be used for collection, local delivery (outdoor PLC) or the deployment of local networks (indoor PLC). The current economic climate appears favourable to the development of PLC, and could enable this technology to become a major alternative to other types of broadband connectivity. Thanks to technological advances, PLC is able to compete with the most widely deployed technologies, boasting equally good performance levels that are being confirmed through the great many trials underway around the world. The sector awaits developments in the regulatory arena, which should enable it to move from the trial stage to the industrial and commercial deployment stage. This report assesses the technology behind power line communications and takes stock of the current regulatory landscape in the leading markets. It also analyses this technology in relation to ADSL and WLAN solutions by presenting key market players involved in the development of PLC, and describes the various types of positioning that electricity groups are able to adopt.
