Following a vibrant period created by strong competitive forces and an extremely rapid development of mobile services, growth in the European market for telecommunications services slowed down appreciably in 2002. At the same time, under the combined influence of rationalisation within the sector and the collapse of the TMT bubble, there was continued change in the industrial organisation of the various European markets: in addition to bankruptcies (though less spectacular than in the USA) and consolidation trends in most countries, the biggest of the European operators are currently in dire financial straits, leaving them little room for initiative measures.
