Ovum's recently published Consumer OTT VoIP Forecast shows that traffic will grow by a CAGR of 20% between 2012 and 2018, to reach 1.7 trillion minutes in 2018. Though our forecast focuses on the consumer market, VoIP is now pervasive across all parts of the telecoms market – wholesale, enterprise, and consumer. Improvements in the availability and speed of broadband networks; growing sophistication, affordability, and adoption of smartphones and computers; and the rise of social media have all contributed to the growth of VoIP traffic. Increasingly, customers are also using VoIP to replace relatively more expensive telco voice services. If the current trajectory is maintained, Ovum expects telcos to lose $63 billion in revenues to OTT VoIP in 2018." |
