During the General Assembly, the URSI Council held elections for the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of Scientific Commissions and Early Carrier Representatives were elected for the 2017-2020 three-year period.

This election marks a historical milestone for Portugal, and more specifically for the Portuguese Committee of URSI, which holds a position of this nature in the URSI structure for the first time. Prof. Nuno Borges de Carvalho of Universidade de Aveiro is currently the Chair of Scientific Commission A of the Portuguese Committee of URSI.

Pedro Cruz, of Controlar, remains the Early Career Representative of Committee A for another 3 years and José Pedro Borrego, Chair of Committee E - electromagnetic environment and interference - of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, will continue to organise the work of "Working Group E6 - Spectrum Management ".

The General Assembly's scientific programme, which was attended by about 1,016 participants, included four lectures, 10 tutorials and about 1,400 presentations (oral and poster sessions), covering the range of topics from URSI's ten scientific committees.

The 33rd General Assembly of URSI will take place in Italy (Rome) in August 2020.
