The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is an European organization for standardization, whose mission consists in producing telecommunications standards, developing also pre-standardization and standardization activities in the areas of information technologies and sound and television broadcasting. ETSI was born from the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT), and in 1988 it was made formally autonomous.
The ETSI bodies are: the General Assembly, responsible for determining policy guidelines; the Board, acting on behalf of the Institute between General Assembly meetings; the Secretariat, undertaking bureaucratic activities; and lastly the technical committees and task forces, which are mainly technical bodies.
Based in Sophia Antipolis, south of France, ETSI unites at present 750 members from 62 countries, and represents administrations, network operators, service providers, research bodies and users. The Institute's work program is determined by its members, who are also responsible for approving its deliverables. As a result, ETSI's activities are maintained in close alignment with the market needs expressed by its members.
ANACOM participates on a regular basis in the General Assembly and in the following groups: 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), ERM (EMC and Radio Spectrum Matters) and more recently, NGN (Next Generation Networks) and MESA (Mobile Broadband Specifications for Public Safety).
