23rd ANACOM seminar - ''Considerations in making electronic communications accessible to all''

The 23rd ANACOM seminar saw the presentation ''Considerations in making electronic communications accessible to all'' by Barbara Delaney ¹, Consumer Policy Manager with the Irish Communications Regulator, Commission for Communications Regulation - ComReg. This presentation was followed by the comments of Luis Carriço, Associated Professor of the Department of Informatics, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. The seminar took place in Lisbon's SANA Malhoa Hotel on 11 February, at 3:30 pm.

Theme and objectives:

Barbara's presentation will detail ComReg’s approach to working with groups representing citizens with disabilities and the Irish communications industry with the objective of making communications accessible to all. The presentation will outline some of the key initiatives undertaken including:  

• the production of a consumer guide entitled Phones and Broadband - a guide for people with disabilities and older people;
• the availability of a free directory enquiry service for disabled users, for both fixed and mobile operators;
• the development and delivery of a breakfast briefing and workshops for communications providers with respect to universal design.

The presentation will conclude with reflections on the work achieved to date and outline ComReg’s next steps in the light of the new Citizens’ Rights Directive.

After that, Luis Carriço will comment Barbara Delaney's presentation and will introduce the topics for the debate.
