A Portuguese in the Galileo project


Pedro Pedreira has been nominated executive director of the Supervisory Authority of the European satellite navigation system (Galileo) following the competition launched by the end of September 2004. Among the candidates selected for the final stage of the competition, there were an Austrian and two Frenchmen, in addition to the Portuguese candidate.

The executive director, Pedro Pedreira, is the legal representative of the Supervisory Authority, and the assignments involved in the post are as follows: to ensure the day-to-day management, the staff supervision and management, the preparation of the meetings of the Administrative Board, the implementation of the annual work programme of the Supervisory Authority, the establishment and execution of the budget thereof, the preparation of the annual activities report, and establishment of the organization chart.

The Galileo Supervisory Authority, the functioning rules of which are similar to those of a regulatory authority, shall be the owner of the whole European satellite radionavigation system and, among others, is responsible for the following tasks:

- To conclude the concession contract with the group selected after the Galileo deployment stage  and to monitor the compliance with the obligations arising therefrom;
- To guarantee the management and control of the use of Community funds allocated to the programme;
- To assist the European Commission in issues concerning satellite radionavigation.
