EC Decision on harmonisation of the 2500-2690 MHz

The European Commission (EC) has adopted a decision on the harmonisation of the 2500-2690 MHz frequency band for terrestrial systems capable of providing electronic communications services in the Community, following the principle of achieving a more flexible use of the spectrum.

This decision of 13 June 2008 ensures that there are coherent technical conditions for the supply of services, for example, mobile access to the Internet. It establishes a period of six months, following its entry into force, for Member States to designate and make available, on a non-exclusive basis, the 2500-2690 MHz band for terrestrial electronic communications services, responding to the convergence of the mobile, fixed and broadcasting sectors and expanding access to broadband. The decision allows for the possibility of transition periods being requested that could include radio spectrum sharing arrangements, pursuant to Decision 676/2002/EC. Member States will have to ensure appropriate protection for systems in adjacent bands.
