''Write a letter to someone to tell them why the world needs tolerance'' was the theme of the 2008 letter writing competition of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), organised in Portugal through a joint initiative of ANACOM and CTT - Correios de Portugal. The competition, which was launched in 2007, is directed at young people between 9 and 15, residing in Portugal.
Of the 747 letters received, the following participants were chosen as winners:
- 1st Category (9-11 years): Mónica Albino, from Funchal, Madeira;
- 2nd Category (12-15 years): Beatriz Teixeira Pinto, from Oliveira do Hospital.
It was also decided to award honourable mentions to the compositions of Maria Santos Fialho, from Nossa Senhora do Bispo, Montemor-o-Novo, and Joana Marques Cruz, from Algueirão, Sintra.
The winning letter of the first category will go on to represent Portugal in the International letter writing competition, organised by the UPU.
