International comparison of broadband prices, November 2007

The report on the main results of an international comparative survey of fixed and mobile broadband prices has been published. The survey, which was carried out by ANACOM, covers mobile broadband prices in fifteen Member States of the European Union (EU15)1 and fixed broadband prices in thirteen of these countries, in effect in November and July 2007.

In terms of prices practiced, the lowest broadband price (fixed) found in Portugal was, in November of 2007, 32.6% below the average of the countries surveyed and similar to prices practised in Austria, Sweden and Denmark. The lowest price in Portugal was also found to be the third lowest, while the price charged by the historic operator was found to be the fourth lowest amongst its counterparts from the other countries.

Meanwhile, Portugal continues to rank amongst the countries with the lowest prices, for most download speeds, when one considers the simple average of the lowest prices practiced by the various Internet service providers (ISP) for the various download speeds available. When download speeds between 2 and 8 Mbps are considered, Portugal ranks between third and fifth place, with prices below the European average; prices are only above the European average for offers of 1 Mbps.

The prices for the most popular offers in Portugal (4 Mbps) are approximately 46% lower than the average of the countries considered, and the fourth lowest.

Most monthly subscription fees offered by the historic operator in Portugal are below the average of the countries surveyed, occupying fourth and fifth positions in the corresponding rankings.

Subscription fees for mobile broadband services in Portugal are significantly lower than the prices in the remaining EU15 countries. In this case, Portugal occupies third place in the rankings, between 36% and 49% below the European average.
