FCCN proposes swift adoption of IPv6 protocol

Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional  (FCCN) (Foundation for National Scientific Computation) has proposed to universities and polytechnic institutes connected to the national education and research network (RCTS) that all Internet and email servers should be made compatible with IPv6 protocol by the end of 2008.

The FCCN proposal was presented and discussed by 35 technicians from departments responsible for the management of the IT networks of the main national universities during the 12th IT Centres Meeting. The FCCN raises the possibility that IPv4 addresses (the protocol currently in force) could be exhausted as soon as 2010 - this would seriously restrict the growth of the Internet and associated services. As an example the FCCN warns that providers of internet access and associated services might stop requesting new addresses, which could constitute a real obstacle to network growth.
