The second Euro-Mediterranean (EuroMed) Ministerial Conference on the Information Society has been taken place in Cairo, Egypt. The conference, which was held on 26 and 27 February 2008 focused on the issue of Building an Enabling Environment for the EuroMed Information Society and was organised by the Slovenian Presidency of the European Union (EU) in partnership with European Commission (EC).
The Final Deceleration of the conference reaffirmed the commitment to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (Barcelona Process), considered fundamental for dialogue and cooperation between Euro-Mediterranean countries. It also stressed the importance of cooperation in the areas of higher education, scientific research and innovation, in order that the objectives of this partnership might be accomplished.
Encouragement was also given to the development of bilateral and regional projects aiming at regulatory reform of the electronic communications sector, as well the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in sharing information throughout the region.
The final declaration further highlighted the role performed by various regional EuroMed projects, including EUMEDCONNECT and NATP-II.
