''Safer Internet'' Programme

The European Commission (EC) has adopted a draft decision of the European Parliament (EP) and of the Council on establishing the ''Safer Internet'' programme in order to improve the safety of children and young people while online by combating illegal content and harmful behaviour. The programme is due for final adoption in 2009.

This new programme, which follows up on the programme implemented between 2005 and 2008, will run from 2009 to 2013 and will focus on Web 2.0 communication services and other social networks. The Commission is committed to combating illegal content and illicit behaviour, including intimidation and corruption and will also conduct a public awareness campaign directed at children, parents and teachers and establish a knowledge database compiled by experts in this area at a European level.

The presented proposal reflects the results of the public consultation on safer Internet and online technologies for children, which was held between April and June 2007, and also included recommendations made by young people who participated in the Youth Forum, organised by the EC on Safer Internet Day which was held on 12 February 2008.
