Commission Communication on WRC-07

The European Commission adopted, on 2 July 2007, a communication on the World Radiocommunication Conference 2007 (WRC-07) of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), establishing the EU's positions on what needs to be achieved at this conference.

There are a number of key objectives, including: ensuring the effective protection of Earth Exploration and other scientific services from harmful interference; providing enough spectrum for aviation applications; accommodating the spectrum demands of future terrestrial mobile systems; satisfying the necessary spectrum requirements for digital radio broadcasting and for maritime services; and preparing actions to support Community policies for the next WRC Conference due in 2011, notably concerning spectrum flexibility, climate change and the Single European Sky.

At the WRC-07, which is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland from 22 October to 16 November 2007, the sharing out of the radiofrequencies spectrum will be negotiated between ITU Member States, especially for sectors of key application, such as mobile communications, broadcasting and aviation.
