Conclusions of 21st ERG meeting

The 21st meeting of the European Regulators Group (ERG) took place 30-31 May in Oslo, Norway.

A key result of this meeting was an agreement on a common approach to the application of new regulatory guidelines on the prices of international roaming services. This follows the European Parliament's approval on 23 May 2007 of a regulation imposing a cap on the prices charged for international roaming services by telecommunications operators of the European Union (EU). This regulation should now receive formal approval from the Council of Ministers for telecommunications which meets on 7 June 2007, entering into force on the day following its official publication.

The ERG also decided to issue an opinion on the different regulatory approaches to the issue of Next Generation Access (NGA) following a request of the European Commission. Accordingly, the ERG has launched a public consultation on the regulatory principles governing next generation access. Interested partied should send their responses by 11 June 2007 by email to erg-secretariat@ec.europa.eu with the subject ''ERG NGA 2007''.

Various other documents were presented, including documents on fixed/ mobile termination rates and variations in the regulatory treatment of Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) across the European Union. In addition approval was given to common positions on the regulation of two electronic communications markets - wholesale broadband access and wholesale local access. Two further documents that were approved at the meeting should shortly be available on the ERG's website: an updated snapshot on mobile termination rates and an updated report on regulatory accounting in practice.

A debriefing session on this meeting has been scheduled and will be held in Brussels on 8 June at 12.30pm. This session is open to all interested parties, but prior registration is required by 5 June. To register, send the registration form below by email to erg-secretariat@ec.europa.eu.
