First European 112 Day

The European Union is going to celebrate the first ''European 112 Day'' on 11 February 2008. For the first time since 1991 and the inception of the European emergency number (112), the European Parliament (EP) and the European Commission (EC) have jointly organised an event with the aim of raising awareness of the emergency number and sensitising EU Member States to the need of improving 112 call handling.

Several activities have been planned, including a press conference and a gala evening, during which the 112 award ceremony will be held. These awards will reward 112 heroes and political leaders.

Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for the Information Society and Media will be among those attending.
