In the next two months, already within the Portuguese presidency of the European Union (EU), it is expected that there will be developments in the process of liberalising EU postal services, specifically at the level of the European Parliament.
The agenda of the Committee on Transport and Tourism's meeting of 4 June 2007 includes a debate on the proposed postal directive presented by the European Commission in October 2006. Meanwhile, on 6 and 7 June 2007, Member State ministers responsible for the communications sector are due to debate the same directive.
In the meantime, the European Commission for the European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services took part in a dinner-debate, held in Strasbourg on 23 May, on the third postal directive. The event was organised by the Free and Fair Post Initiative and saw discussion on the theme and action plan for postal services.
