Eurostat releases data on services of general interest in Europe

The Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) has recently released the 2007 edition of the publication “Consumers in Europe - Facts and figures on services of general interest”, which focuses on the network industries providing services of general interest, such as water, transport, electricity, telecommunications and postal services.

This document contains important data for assessing the liberalisation of markets in Europe and the consequences this has for consumers, allowing a comparison between the different services and European countries.

The objective of the publication is to assist policy decision-makers, at a European level, with their understanding of the needs of consumers, and so to make a contribution to strengthening consumer policy. Likewise the document should prove useful in supporting the development activities of other stakeholders, such as consumer organisations, public authorities and suppliers of goods and services.
