Study on E-commerce in Portugal

The results of the recent ''Study on E-commerce in Portugal'' have been released. This study, which set out to assess e-commerce trends and developments as well as trends in internet use and associated services, was published by the Portuguese E-commerce Association - Associação do Comércio Electrónico em Portugal (ACEP) and Netsonda.

The results of the study, which are based on a survey of Portuguese internet users carried out in January 2007, reveal that: the frequency of internet access has increased in the last two years (79% of those surveyed); the majority of those surveyed (77%) use the internet to get information on products but complete their purchase through traditional means, with just 20% getting both information and completing their purchase wholly on the internet; 78% of respondents have already made a purchase over the internet, with the large majority of these making less than one online purchase per month; over 75% of respondents reported spending less than 75 euros per month on online purchases.

The survey goes on to reveal that of the products and services that are acquired online, IT products come out as being the most acquired according to 39.6% of those surveyed, followed by electronic and mobile phone products (36.5%) and tickets for shows, sporting and other events (36.1%).

Finally when asked about the benefits of e-commerce, those surveyed by the study cite not having to leave home/travel to shops (63.9%) as being the main advantage followed by the fact that they can compare prices (56.9%) and that they can purchase products or services at any time (54.1%).
