Study Group - SG 5 (Terrestrial Services) - WP 5B - Geneva

Geneva hosted last 10-21 May the fifth meeting of working party 5B (WP 5B) of ITU-R study group 5 (SG 5), which focused on maritime mobile service, including the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), aeronautic mobile service and radio-determination service.

Some 111 documents were presented for appreciation by WP 5B, distributed according to subject matter among four subgroups, as follows:

  • Subgroup 5B-1 – Radio-determination;

  • Subgroup 5B-2 – Aeronautic;

  • Subgroup 5B-3 – Maritime;

  • Subgroup 5B-4 – Diverse.

The following stand out among the issues dealt with:

  • Completion of work on preparing texts for the CPM concerning points 1.3, 1.4, 1.9, 1.10, 1.14, 1.15 and 1.21 of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-12) agenda;

  • Continuation of revision on the channelling of Appendix 17 in order to implement new digital technologies for maritime mobile service;

  • Start of work on revising Recommendation ITU-R M.1177-3 on techniques for measuring undesirable emissions in radar systems;

  • Start of work on revising the Recommendation/Report on the future Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) numbering system;

  • Continuation of work on revising the new Recommendation concerning protection criteria and characteristics for aeronautic radio-navigation service radars in the 13.25-13.40 GHz frequency band;

  • Revision of new Reports on:

    • Initial considerations on compatibility between a proposal for new aeronautic mobile service (AM(R)S) and the radio-navigation by satellite system (RNSS) operating in 5010-5030 MHz;

    • Oceanographic radars – interference reduction techniques and efficient spectrum use, technical and operational considerations;

    • Viability of sharing sub-bands between fixed and oceanographic radars and mobile services in the 30-50 MHz band;

    • Frequency band for control of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS);

    • Technical characteristics and operational requisites in Wireless Avionics Intra-Communications (WAIC).
