e-Commerce growth in fourth quarter of 2006

The volume of sales made by e-commerce companies in Portugal continued to grow in the final quarter of 2006, according to the results of the ''Quarterly Barometer of Electronic Commerce in Portugal - 4th quarter 2006'', released recently by Associação do Comércio Electrónico em Portugal (ACEP - Portuguese Association for e-Commerce) and by the company Netsonda.

Based on a survey of ACEP members, the results show that over 85% of the e-Commerce companies surveyed reported an increase in the volume of internet sales during the quarter when compared to the same period of 2005, with 68.4% of them reporting increases of 50% or more. These figures do, however, show a drop of 5% on the previous quarter.

The Barometer also showed that, compared to the 4th quarter of 2005, there was an increase in the number of customers making purchases on the sites of the companies surveyed. Around 65% of the companies reported an increase in customer numbers of between 1% and 50%, while around 11.5% of the companies reported increases in excess of 50%.

Looking at investment levels, the results show that around 57% of the companies surveyed maintained the same level of investment in their sites as the same quarter of year before, while around 37.1% of the companies increased investment levels. These figures are very similar to those reported for the 3rd quarter of 2006.

Finally, when it comes to the types of product and service with the most transactions, electronic products (including mobile phones) came out on top, reported by 31.4% of the companies surveyed, followed by IT and computer products (25.7%) and games and consoles with around 22.9%.
