ANACOM organises Workshop on Next Generation Networks (NGN)

ANACOM is holding a workshop on Next Generation Networks (NGN). It will be held in the Sana Malhoa Hotel, in Lisbon on 9 and 10 October 2006, starting at 9am.

Achieving convergence between traditional communication networks (ISDN/PSTN/PLMN) and IP networks is the goal of the standardization work being carried out by various international organizations such as the 3GPP group (Third Generation Partnership Project), the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), and the International Telecommunications Union. This involves, on the one hand phasing out the proliferation of networks dedicated to specific service, and on the other promoting application and hardware convergence.

The technological platform favoured by most operators and suppliers of switching technology, especially those that supply support to current electronic communication networks is IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem). As the first versions of international standards and recommendations on this area appear, it is important to discuss and asses, not only the current situation as far as suppliers are concerned, but also what the strategy of the national operators is in this area.

The process of migrating from the current communication networks to NGN, is being planned and implemented in distinct ways by various international operators, specifically by way of:

(a) Progressive substitution of the current network, migrating all services to NGN networks and adding new services; and
(b) Overlapping the existing network to provide support to next generation services.

Accordingly, it is seen as an opportune time to hold this workshop, which, it is hoped, will fire national discussion on the technological and standardization options available, international experience of migration from current networks and the potential impact on regulation.

The workshop is mainly meant for providers of electronic communication services, but is open to all interested parties. To attend, please register using our online registration form  Registration Form.
