Commission study on electronic communications networks

The European Commission (EC) has released the preliminary results of the report ''Availability and Robustness of Electronic Communications Infrastructures'', carried out for the Commission by Alcatel-Lucent.

This study, whose final report is due for publication in February 2007, looks into a range of issues related to the availability and security of Europe's current electronic communication infrastructure, in particular in view of threats such as terrorist attack and natural disaster. It directs a range of recommendations at the European Commission, Member-States and the private sector.

One of report's key findings was that Europe's electronic communication networks had insufficient capacity to respond adequately to an emergency situation. It also highlights the risk of the growing dependency of these networks on technologies controlled by software that does not offer security guarantees.

The Commission took the opportunity to seek contributions from interested parties on the matter. Comments should be sent by email to infso-a3@ec.europa.eu by the end of April 2007.
