ENUM - public consultation results and follow-up action

By determination of 11 January 2007, ANACOM approved the public consultation report on the ENUM service, launched on February 2006, having received contributions from the following entities: Ericsson, FCCN, Onitelecom, Portabil, PT Group, Sonaecom and Vodafone Portugal.

It should be noted that ENUM was developed with the aim of enabling the correspondence between telephone numbers and Internet domain names, making it possible for users who only have another user's traditional telephone number to access applications. Recently, the ENUM concept was extended so as to solve routing problems in IP networks, by means of similar technological solutions. This is indeed an opportunity for companies working on an IP environment to ensure in a more independent way the interoperability of electronic communications services, which are also supported on traditional networks. Thus, to a service focused at first on users (User ENUM) was added a service focused on providers, based on the same architecture (Infrastructure ENUM).

Under the same determination, it was decided to propose to the Government the appointment of ANACOM, being a National Administration in the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), as Tier 1 Manager of the "1.5.3.e164.arpa" domain, on account of its being responsible for the management of the international country code (351) allocated by ITU-T.

It was also decided to promote the establishment of a working group on ENUM that assesses the conditions for the implementation of ENUM in Portugal, including the setting up of a pilot scheme. In addition, a protocol for the operation of this pilot scheme, in a way yet to be defined, will be proposed to the Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (FCCN - National Scientific Computing Foundation).
