World Standards Day

The World Standards Day is celebrated today, 14 October, this year under the theme “Standards for a Safer World”, in an initiative stressed by the international standards bodies: the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

  • There is indeed and important set of international standards, adopted within these organizations, especially directed towards security in several fields, namely in the framework of communications:
  • Products and systems which allow economies of scale, which mean prices that are more affordable to consumers;
  • Measurement of electromagnetic emissions in the human body;
  • Guarantee of communications following a natural disaster or during an emergency situation;
  • Fixed and mobile communication networks’ security and integrity protection.

The European Commission marks this day with the organization, in Brussels, of a conference on “International cooperation in standardization”, which will discuss the benefits and challenges that international standardization and cooperation in this domain involve for the opening of markets and industrial growth, focusing especially on citizens.

In this context and because security is the theme, ANACOM has been developing several actions in this matter, among which:

  • To assure the Commission’s work for the Future Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, through the “GMDSS Committee”;
  • To collaborate in the definition of emergency civil planning policies, technically supporting the organizations and services responsible for rolling-out and managing the emergency communications integrated network;
  • To follow the developments of the electronic communications networks and services, aiming at assuring the integrity and safety of the public electronic communications networks, as well as the confidentiality of communications and the protection of users’ personal data;
  • To guarantee the protection of the privacy/security of users, in particular regarding spam activities;
  • To guarantee the security of online transactions, an action that is part of the priority project of the 2005-2007 operational plan regarding electronic commerce.

In face of the importance of this matter and of the responsibilities of ANACOM, a thematic area on standardization, addressing its several parts, will soon be available on this website.
