INE releases statistical data on the communications markets

The Portuguese telecommunications market’s revenues increased 2.7 per cent from 2003 to 2004, reaching about 6,478 million euros by the end of 2004, according to recent data released by the National Statistical Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estatística - INE), in the scope of the Postal Services Survey (National and Independent) and of the Telecommunications Survey, both for 2004.

According to these data, revenues of the telephone service, including those of the fixed, mobile and international services, had a 6.1 per cent increase in relation to 2003, reaching 4,066.5 million euros by the end of 2004.  In spite of the slight increase in the fixed service’s revenues (around 1.6 per cent), mobile service keeps on gaining ground in the total telephone service’s revenues - in 2004 it represented around 53.1 per cent of the total revenues and had a 9.9 per cent increase on the revenues in relation to 2003.

Total investment in the telecommunications sector increased around 9.3 per cent on the previous year, reaching a total of 828 million euros in 2004, most of which in equipment and infrastructure (67.4 percent of the total).

Regarding the (national and independent) postal services sector’s turnover, its increase was around 2.2 per cent in 2004. Although national postal services, which are those provided by CTT - Correios de Portugal, maintain a dominant position in the market, they have just lost 1.5 per cent of their market share between 2003 and 2004, representing by the end of 2004 around 73.7 per cent of the total turnover of the market.
