Survey of broadband use

A report citing the key results of a survey into the use of broadband has been released. The survey, which was carried out by  ANACOM and TNS Euroteste between 19 December 2005 and 23 January 2006, analyses the use of broadband internet access services in Portugal.

One of the key findings of the survey was that in January 2006 around 26% of Portuguese households had broadband access to the internet. This figure gives an increase of 9% compared to the situation seen in December 2004.

Focusing on the different broadband technologies used to access the internet, ADSL was found to be the most widely used (47.2% of the surveyed users), followed by cable modem (46.6% of users).

When looking at the trend of migration from narrowband to broadband, a major shift in the barriers to migration was seen: There are less and less respondents citing "don't need / not interested" as a reason for sticking with narrowband (38%). Instead a growing number of users pointing to price (around 23% of respondents) and geographical coverage as being important migration obstacles (around 12% of respondents).

Around 70% of all those surveyed were found to be clients of one of the companies of PT Group (37.8% Sapo ADSL and 32.2% Netcabo), while Cabovisão was found to the second largest operator by customer share with about 15% of users.

Overall the majority of broadband internet users considered themselves with the quality of the service they received with about 88% saying they were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the speed of access and around 86% being "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the billing accuracy and transparency.

The survey was carried out using a sample made up of individuals of both sexes of 18 years of age or more, resident in Continental Portugal or in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. The sample was selected by region and habitat, with interview selection being based on the quota method. In total 4,225 interviews were carried out including 1,099 interviews with broadband users. The scope of the sample was defined to limit the margin of error to a maximum of 4%.
