Directive published on data retention

A new European directive (2006/24/EC) on data retention has been passed, concerning the retention of data generated or processed the providers of publicly available electronic communications services or of public communications networks. The directive of the European Parliament and of the Council was published in the Official Journal of the EU on 13 April and was approved by the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 21 February. It amends Directive 2002/58/EC.

Member States have until 15 September 2007 to transpose the new regulations stipulated by the directive except where notification has been made under paragraph 3 of article 15, as is Portugal's case.
