A workshop organized by the European Commission took place in Brussels, on 17 December 2004, concerning the preliminary presentation of the final report of the study on "Implementation of wide-screen and high definition television in the context of digital broadcasting", developed by Eurostrategies.
The meeting, which gathered representatives of regulatory bodies, television operators, network operators, manufacturers and industrial associations of the sector, stressed the importance of high definition and, from the start, of wide-screen as regards the development of digital television, which calls for greater efforts at quality level. In this context, the fact that a first wave of commercial offers has attempted at making a difference in a quantitative sense, through the reinforcement of the number of television channels, has been highlighted.
Several experts have thus considered that, currently, there are already conditions of entry in many European countries, namely at the level of 16:9 televisions, which justify stronger efforts in the transmission in wide-screen format, in particular, as a factor for the promotion of digital television.
The Commission has announced that it is currently organizing a workshop on high definition television - HDTV - which was held in Brussels, on 21 January.
