Luxembourg and the Presidency of the European Union

During the first half of 2005, Luxembourg assumes the Presidency of the European Union, taking over from Holland, which held the Presidency during the second half of 2004.

In December 2004, the new Presidency set out the main points of its work programme, highlighting the development of the Lisbon Strategy. The mid-term review of the Strategy is scheduled for the Spring 2005 Council, based on the three fundamental pillars of this process: competitiveness and economic growth, social cohesion and sustained development. The debate on the future budget of the European Union promises to be another of the dossiers which will receive special attention during the next six months.
