Network of postal establishments - 1st half 2010

ANACOM has released the latest report on the network of postal establishments belonging to CTT - Correios de Portugal, S.A. (CTT),  the concessionaire company of the universal postal service, as at the end of first half 2010.

This report show that, at the end of the period being reported, there were 2897 postal establishments in operation – 7 more than at the end of 2009; of these, 884 were permanent post offices and 2002 were postal service offices.  The data shows a slight increase in the total number of postal establishments , in line with the upward trend seen since the second half of 2008.

The report indicates that there was at least one post office located in each municipality, whereas 292 municipalities (94.8 percent of the total) had two or more postal establishments, a concept which includes not just post offices, but also postal service offices. All post offices were providing the full range of concession services and 45.5 percent of postal service offices were not providing the postal parcels service, while providing the remaining services of the concession.

Compared to other Member-States of the European Union (EU) and based on data made available by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), with reference to 2008, the values reported in Portugal compare favourably with the EU average, both in terms of coverage and in terms of postal density.

In the context of the Concession of the Universal Postal Service, it is reported that, during the first six months of 2010, ANACOM received 12 notifications from CTT as follows: 5 notifications in respect of the closure of post offices, of which involved their replacement by postal service offices; 6 notifications in respect of reductions in post office working hours; 1 notification in respect of increases in post office working hours.
