Meeting of ECC PT1 - Vienna

Vienna hosted last 11-13 January the 37th meeting of ECC project team (PT) 1, chaired by Didier Chauveau. ECC PT1 is responsible for all issues concerning international mobile telecommunications (IMT). Its mission includes, among others, developing of harmonisation measures in terms of designating bands identified for IMT and respective channels, carrying out sharing/compatibility studies involving IMT and co-ordinating European positions in the Radiocommunication sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R).

Noteworthy is the ongoing work on revising Decision CEPT ECC(06)01 on the core UMTS/IMT band in 2 GHz, where it was agreed that the TDD option as currently planned should be kept and that the possibility (not yet used) of external pairing with the 2.6 GHz band should be removed.

On the other hand, regarding elaboration of spectrum planning for the 3400-3800 MHz band with a view to harmonising it for the IMT system, a draft ECC decision was produced. To finish with this matter at the next ECC PT1 meeting, a working plan was conceived that resolves issues such as co-existence techniques of TDD networks (e.g. synchronisation and filtering) and border co-ordination (e.g. FDD vs. TDD).

Also worth highlighting are the activities associated to spectrum sharing and compatibility, where much progress was made, especially in determining co-ordination methods for the 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands assigned to IMT.

Lastly, note that in the wake of the questionnaire sent to CEPT administrations regarding mobile broadband raffic/penetration/services, a summary of the responses was compiled. This information will also be used to create a document to be posted on the ECO website.
