Satelite mobile services - EC calls on European countries

The European Commission (EC), through its Vice President and Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, has launched an appeal to 21 Member States of the European Union (EU), including Portugal, to rapidly introduce all the legislative measures necessary for the development of pan-European systems of mobile satellite services (MSS) that could be used for high speed Internet access, mobile TV, radio and emergency communications.

This alert from the EC relates to the selection, in May 2009, of Inmarsat Ventures Limited and Solaris Mobile Limited as operators of MSS, as well as the adoption in 2008 by the European Parliament and by the Council of Ministers of the EU of the decision to make MSS available in all Member States by May 2011.
