Postal traffic totals 295 million objects

Total postal services traffic increased by 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11) compared to the previous quarter, with around 295 million objects - increases are generally seen in the first quarter of each year, compared to the last quarter of the previous year. Compared to the first quarter of 2010, total traffic fell by 3.3 percent, maintaining the downward trend of previous years (in the last five years, traffic has declined by 10.7 percent, an average decline of 2, 7 percent each year).

The quarter's variations are due primarily to the trends reported in postal items included in the reserved area, taking into account the weight of this component in total traffic (80 percent).

97 percent of objects distributed during the quarter had national destinations, and the remaining 3 percent had international destinations.

About 98 percent of postal traffic consisted of correspondence (which also includes direct mail and editorial mail); the amount of correspondence increased by 5.6 percent in the quarter but declined by 3.5 percent compared to 1st quarter 2010 (1Q10). Postal parcels traffic fell by 6.1 percent over the previous quarter and increased by 3.8 year on year, representing only 2 percent of total traffic.

At the end of 1Q11, traffic of the liberalized area represented 20.5 per cent of all postal items, a value similar to that recorded in 1st quarter of 2010. The annual downward trend in this type of traffic remains in place (-2.1 per cent compared to 1Q10).

In 1Q11, there were about 60.3 million postal objects in the liberalized area, consisting of 6.6 million express mail objects and 53.7 million non-express mail objects. The companies of Grupo CTT reported a 34.2 percent share of express mail traffic and a 94.1 percent share of non-express mail services.
