On occasion of ITU Telecom 2011, held in Geneva from 25 to 27 October 2011, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released the brochure “The World in 2011: ICT Facts and Figures”. Outlining the latest trends and developments in the sector of information and communication technologies (ICT), the brochure also includes the latest global numbers on Internet use, fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions, international Internet bandwidth, home ICT access and other data.
According to the ITU, one third of the world’s population (of around 7 billion people) are using the Internet, with 45% of the world’s Internet users below the age of 25. The ITU also reports 5.9 billion mobile-cellular subscriptions, giving a global penetration rate of 87%.
