Ireland assumes Presidency of the European Union - 01.01.2013

Ireland has assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), for a period of six months (January to June 2013), thereby initiating the functions of a new trio presidency that will rotate to Lithuania (2nd half 2013) and Greece (1st half of 2014).

The main aims of the trio programme are to stimulate growth, create jobs and boost EU competitiveness. In sector terms, there's a focus on the development of the digital single market and the new digital agenda.

Under the Irish Presidency, among the key Transport, Telecommunications and Energy policies, a top priority is being attached to electronic identification (e-ID) and trust services as being fundamental to the digital single market, together with issues such as web accessibility and high-speed broadband.
