World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is being held this year on 17 May, focusing on the issue of ''ICTs and improving road safety'', as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The ITU chose this theme to encourage its members to discuss and adopt concrete measures in their national road safety policies, especially educational programmes and/or initiatives which promote the use of ICT in enhancing and improving road safety.
The ITU also seeks to draw attention to the safety risks associated with the improper use of ICT while driving (mobile phones, navigation systems, etc.), which distracts drivers' attention from the road. Every year, 1.3 million people die in traffic related accidents, according to a report from United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC); another 20-50 million people are injured, mainly in developing countries around the world.
In Portugal, the day will be marked at FPC - Fundação Portuguesa para as Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation), which will host a conference on this issue in cooperation with APDSI - Associação para a Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Sociedade da Informação (Portuguese Association for Information Society Development).
An institutional session is also being hosted; this will be attended by the Chairman of ANACOM's Management Board and also Chairman of FPC, Fátima Barros. The event includes inauguration of an exhibition of the works of the Portugal Telecom Contemporary Art Collection.
